Our secret weapon

Did you know that you can have as many savings accounts as there are stars in the sky? Well, I promised Jason I'd work on what I call "embellishing the truth" (he calls it "gross exaggeration"๐Ÿ™„) so let's just say that when I contacted our bank a few years ago about opening another savings account, they told me I could have as many as I liked. WELL HOT DOG! We've got one for trips we want to take, one for each of our kids, one for general savings and another labeled "BIG GIVE".

Each month, we commit to giving away 10% of our income. Read more about that here. We know that giving consistently is one of the most valuable things we can do, but when we have unexpected gifts come our way or extra income that we don't regularly rely on for our budget, we stash a little away in our "BIG GIVE" account. Think tax returns, cash back programs, overage checks, monetary gifts, or a tip that Jason wasn't expecting at a painting job. We let that grow and when a need arises in our community or we find a cool opportunity to give somewhere with a special request, we have the funds to go GRAND CANYON with our generosity.

We've helped people buy cars, traveled to see sick friends, paid for someone's rent, knocked expensive items off a few wish lists, and dropped a significant amount of cash in the mailboxes of some people we love and others' we've never met.

Having a savings account like this is so much fun! When we hear about a need, I can just see the gears in Jason's brain turning and I get a sparkle in my eye. We don't have to figure out how to be the answer to someone's prayers. The money is there and we get to do something that would have been impossible if we'd frittered it away on trivial purchases.

If you're looking for a way to give more, check out your financial institution's protocol for savings accounts. There are some really creative ways to do this. Some banks will put $1 into a savings account every time you use your debit card. Others will slide a certain amount every month or every two weeks from checking into savings. Small amounts add up to BIG opportunities to give over time.

Think of it like a baseball game. You make a hit, get on base, field a ball...all those things help the team and they are important. But nothing compares to hitting a homerun once or twice a season. That adrenaline rush of doing the ULTIMATE good for your team, your community your work place...there's nothing like it! Let a secret savings account that you invest in over time be a powerful weapon for doing serious good!
